Mamelodi Sundowns are targeting yet another SuperSport United player, with the Siya crew informed that they are making young Thapelo Maseko the subject of a lucrative bid.
The Chloorkop-based outfit usually throw big money at players and Matsatsantsa are quite familiar with their approach after selling a number of their star players to their crosstown rivals in recent years.
Ronwen Williams, Teboho Mokoena, Sipho Mbule, Aubrey Modiba and Grant Kekana are the most recent players to make the switch to the other side of Tshwane, but transfers between these clubs have been going on at a fairly frequent rate for over a decade.
It now appears that Sundowns have set their sights on the 20-year-old left winger, and as is now the norm, are willing to substantiate their interest with a lucrative deal.
This publication reported that KVC Westerlo expressed an interest and tabled a bid for Maseko, which SuperSport declined, but Sundowns are understood to be lining up a €1 million (±R20m) offer for the player.
"Maseko is not for sale. We have received two offers from them (Westerlo), but like I said, Maseko is not for sale at the moment. And even if he was for sale, the latest Westerlo offer would not be entertained by the board," CEO Stan Matthews told the Siya crew last month.
Matthews further revealed that they would want to hold onto Maseko for another season, but with Sundowns' mooted big-money offer, it remains to be seen if Matsatsantsa manage to fend off the Brazilians' interest.
According to the information made available to Soccer Laduma, Maseko is understood to be tied to SuperSport until June 2025, with the club also adding an option to extend his stay by a further two years. Effectively, the youngster could remain on their books until, at least, 2027.
