Ex-Chiefs Coach: 'I Spoke To Arthur In Cape Town'

Ex-Chiefs Coach: 'I Spoke To Arthur In Cape Town'

Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Muhsin Ertugral has given his thoughts on what will improve the club next season and is confident things will be different for the side.

Amakhosi have had an inconsistent season, but remain hopeful that they can finish a difficult campaign with a trophy in the cabinet. They have the Nedbank Cup still to play for and have to get past their rivals Orlando Pirates in the semi-final this weekend to give themselves a shot at ending an eight-year trophy drought.

In the DStv Premiership, the Soweto giants have fallen way short of challenging. They are currently more than 20 more behind champions Mamelodi Sundowns and have lost 10 matches. With two matches still to play this season, Amakhosi face the possibility of losing more than 10 matches in a season for the first time in the PSL era. That's a record Zwane would not want to have in his first campaign as head coach at the club and in the PSL.

Despite all the challenges, Ertugral sees a light at the end of the tunnel for Zwane and the Soweto giants.

"I spoke to Arthur in Cape Town a couple of months ago. We saw each other and he was always like a son to me. First thing, I really wish him success, probably more than everyone in South Africa, because he was always like a son to me. He was a fantastic player and people have forgotten what kind of a player he was, actually. What is happening at the moment, it was not the Chiefs we know over the last years. There were too many coaches coming and going and too many players have changed. It was a lot of instability in the team," Ertugral told the Siya crew.

"It was a brave decision for Arthur and for management to bring in a young coach that has not proven himself at that level, because the pressure of the previous years. They haven't won a cup in eight years, so it doesn't make life easy for him. Hopefully the fans will understand what Chiefs are going through. Obviously the pressure is mounting from every angle, but they have probably identified everything that needed to be identified, to rectify (matters) for next season.

Ertugral further went on to explain what he feels needs to be worked on going forward.

"The structure in the defensive line I didn't like and I stated it with the public when I did an analysis. I've been asked for that and I did it publicly. The midfield didn't protect the defensive line. I know that Arthur is working on that. He is a great football brain. I think next season will be different. Let them learn this season. I think next season Chiefs could challenge."
