Secret To Downs' Success Revealed

Secret To Downs' Success Revealed

Mamelodi Sundowns first team coach Steve Komphela has opened up about the dismantling of the co-coaching arrangement.

Sundowns are unbeaten in all competitions since Rulani Mokwena was elevated to a head coaching position in October last year.

Komphela, who has been promoted from a senior coach position, with Manqoba Mngqithi moved to senior coach, says there is institutional success at Sundowns and their current form has to do with everybody sacrificing themselves than individual titles.

"Everybody at Sundowns sacrifices themselves. There is a book that I read, 'Ego Is The Enemy'. They speak of, in success, there's innocent climb but as soon as you reach a certain level, then there's a 'me' disease, that's where ego chips in," Komphela told journalists at the Nedbank Cup draw.

"So it's very important to have that at the back of the mind when you work that there's success, success, but remember that ego is the enemy, as soon as you achieve success now you want to make a 'me' disease. So you got to be very careful and conscious about that," he said.

The former Kaizer Chiefs head coach was also asked whether the dismantling of the co-coaching arrangement was what the club needed to evolve but he insisted that the co-coaching system has contributed to where they are now as a club.

"I think it was a hell of a great arrangement from the beginning. In fact it's the same arrangement that made the transition to where we're at," the former Bafana Bafana coach said.

"Had we started otherwise, would we be where we at? No body knows. But looking at how it started and how it transcended, it got solid.

"It's like cement, cement starts as fluid and all that but at the back of the sun and the time and all that, it solidifies, this could have been one of those cases," he added.
