Baloyi On Blom: That Has Happened To A Whole Lot Of Players

Baloyi On Blom: That Has Happened To A Whole Lot Of Players

Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brian Baloyi says he relates to the situation of Njabulo Blom at Naturena and feels the club is shooting themselves in the foot.

Blom's future at Naturena is up in the air, with his contract coming to an end in June 2023. As things stand, there is no agreement over a new contract and Blom, who is one of the most consistent players in the Amakhosi side, is illegible to sign a pre-contract with any club interested in his services when the January transfer window opens.

The Siya crew understands that the ball is in Amakhosi's court in the situation, but Blom and his representatives are not closed to looking elsewhere, with Tshwane sides SuperSport United and Mamelodi Sundowns closely monitoring things.

Baloyi, who left Amakhosi to join Sundowns during his playing career, has given an explanation of what he thinks is happening with Blom at Chiefs.

"I would think that, by now, Chiefs have learnt their lesson. But clearly, they haven't. For as long as we don't talk, Chiefs will never be better. They may look at us and think we are just criticizing. It's the same issue with (Cristiano) Ronaldo at Man United. Sometimes we need to be honest. We love the club and for the club to be better, we need to criticize. We can't keep patting them on the back when they are doing the wrong things," Baloyi said.

"What Chiefs does with players is that they will say ,'You are still young, you are building your name'. Then they pay you in a certain bracket. When you become part of the senior players and you want to get what you deserve, they are like, 'No, you are asking for too much'. What is too much? I don't want to single out players who are getting too much money but are not contributing to the club.

"It's a situation the club puts itself in. When young players start performing, they don't improve their contracts accordingly. They wait until it's too late. They would keep you on a R10 000 contract for five, six, seven or eight years. When you are now at a level of playing for the national team and you deserve to be getting R100 000, they are like, 'From R10 000 to R100 000, you are crazy'. Then they say, 'No, we will give you R50 000'. But they know very well that you deserve to be in the R100 000 bracket. But, over time, they did not upgrade the contract accordingly. That's the situation the young boy is in. That has happened to a whole lot of players, including myself when I was there. If I saw what he is asking for, he probably deserves it. But you will find that the big problem is that it's a big jump from what he is earning. The biggest problem is that he was not upgraded accordingly through the seasons."
