It took injuries to Nkosinathi Sibisi, Olisa Ndah and Innocent Maela for him to feature, but Mthethwa has featured in his first match for the Buccaneers this season.
The lanky defender, who has been heavily linked with an exit from the club featured in the Carling Black Label Cup against Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns respectively.
Despite his lack of action this season, the 25-year-old looked assured on the ball and as composed as possible alongside Thapelo Xoki.
After his match, Bucs' Spanish coach was quizzed about the defender's surprise inclusion in the starting XI although he would not divulge much detail.
"We have an incredible department in the centre-back position as we were showing during the whole week and this was not an exception," Riveiro told journalists.

Since joining Pirates in 2017, Mthethwa has enjoyed four different loan spells at Chippa United and Richards Bay respectively and with the January transfer window fast approaching, it remains to be seen whether he will secure a fifth loan in search of more regular game-time.
