Chiefs, meanwhile, were without their top goal-scorer Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana, as they brought in they brought in Khama Billiat, Dillan Solomons and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo as changes from their draw against AmaZulu.
The Buccaneers had a lively start as Saleng had an early chance after a through ball by Erasmus but his low shot shot was smothered by Chiefs shot-stopper Brandon Petersen from close-range.
After absorbing the pressure in the early stages, Chiefs also took the game to Pirates as Billiat had a chance on 15 minutes after a cross by Solomons but his finish let him down at the back post.
As the game opened up, Riveiro was forced to make a change shortly before the half-hour mark after Innocent Maela seemingly pulled his hamstring and he was replaced by Paseka Mako.

With the game on the edge, Arthur Zwane looked for inspiration from the bench in the last 20 minutes as Kgaogelo Sekgota replaced Du Preez.
As Pirates advanced in numbers, they were caught on a quick counter-attack, as Yusuf Maart broke the deadlock for Amakhosi five minutes later with a sensational strike from his own half that looped over Mpontshane, who was out of his area and bounced into a gaping net.
