As SuperSport United missed out on progressing to the semi-finals of the MTN8 after losing 3-1 to Orlando Pirates last Saturday, Lyle Lakay was a notable absentee from coach Gavin Hunt's starting line-up.
Lakay hoped to start the new season on a high to continue from where he left off in the 2023/24 campaign where he amassed a whopping 38 appearances across all competitions and racked up 10 goal contributions, but he was an unused substitute against the Buccaneers.

With the Spartans now having a long wait until their next game in mid-September when the Betway Premiership season will be starting, Lakay will be working hard in training like the rest of his teammates to ensure that he regains his place in Hunt's starting line-ups.
"To be honest, I was disappointed, you know. Obviously, I think anybody would but at the end of the day it is the coach's decision, and we have to respect that as players, and we have to respect the coach has his planning and he knows what he is doing," said Lakay, speaking exclusively to the Siya crew.

"So, yeah, even though I was disappointed, I think anybody would have been disappointed, because we all want to play, but like I said at the end of the day it's the coach's decision and we have to respect it. It's not the first and it won't be the last," the Cape Town-born player added.
