Pirates Overtake Chiefs In Chivaviro Chase

Orlando Pirates have emerged as the favourites in pursuit of Ranga Chivaviro's signature, the Siya crew has learnt.

For several weeks now, Chivaviro has been linked with a move to different clubs in the DStv Premiership and abroad as he has been scoring goals for Marumo Gallants and having an impressive season.

Kaizer Chiefs, Richards Bay FC, as well as Tanzania's Young Africans and Libya's Al Akhdar SC are some of the clubs that have been keen to land the in-form striker's signature.

Just towards the end of last week, Chiefs appeared to be the favourites to sign Chivaviro after the player's camp turned down an offer of around R3 million from Al Akhdar on a one-year offer plus an option to extend for another year.

The Siya crew has it on good authority that at that time there had been talks between Chiefs and the player's camp regarding the potential move.

However, latest information reaching the Siya crew is that Pirates, who won a cup double this past season and will be going to the CAF Champions League, are also showing serious interest in the 30-year-old with a view of adding him to coach Jose Riveiro's squad for next season.

Chivaviro scored 17 goals from 30 matches in all competitions in the 2022/23 campaign.

"It turns out that Ranga might sign with Pirates after all. Contact has been made with Marumo Gallants from Pirates regarding a possible move," said the source.

"There's been confusion regarding the player's contract situation at Marumo because the club claims to have exercised the one-year option on his deal, while the player and his camp have been under the impression that the original one-year deal is set to expire at the end of next month. The negotiations are ongoing but don't be surprised if he ends up at Pirates and follows in the footsteps of (Ndabayithethwa) Ndlondlo and (Miguel) Timm who joined the club from Marumo," the source added.
