Stuart Baxter could sign striker Wayde Lekay if he likes what he sees, the Siya crew has been told.
The Englishman has taken over at Swedish second-tier outfit Helsingborgs IF for the rest of the season this year despite being recruited earlier as technical director until there were changes in the dugout.
According to insiders, former Cape Town City and TS Galaxy forward Lekay has been offered to the club and it's believed he could be leaving South Africa to be assessed by the ex-Kaizer Chiefs coach.
Lekay started the 2022/23 season on the books of City, but quickly fell down the pecking order under coach Eric Tinkler.
The two parties quietly went their separate ways in March and now the player is on the hunt for a new home.
Indications are that Baxter has shown an interest, and South African players have had a good track record in Sweden over the years.
Soccer Laduma has been led to believe there's nothing official yet, but with Lekay a free agent, he is not bound by time to make the move.
Baxter was apparently interested the forward while at Amakhosi, but the player was later assessed by his W Arthur Zwane, who subsequently went in a different direction after Lekay spent several weeks at Naturena.
Lekay has only ever played for two clubs in the DStv Premiership and is now eager to prove himself elsewhere – and Baxter holds the cards.
Should more South African players look for opportunities in Sweden?
