Baloyi: We're struggling to find another Itumeleng Khune

Baloyi: We're struggling to find another Itumeleng Khune

Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brian Baloyi has pointed out solutions for the the lack of goalkeepers in the country.

Mzansi has seen some greats shot-stoppers in the likes of Andre Arendse, Senzo Meyiwa, Itumeleng Khune, Moneeb Josephs and Brian Baloyi.

Spiderman believes having more foreign keepers in the PSL has contributed immensely in this challenge and refers back to another big crisis of strikers which has costed Bafana Bafana.

"I think that is a challenge. We've had for many years, in true South African fashion, wait for problems to be bigger," Baloyi told the media in Durban.

"In the last two years we've had a problem with strikers and we knew why... Top goalscorers in the PSL have always come from Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia and other countries, (and there is) nothing wrong with that.

"Now, most of the teams in SA have foreign keepers as their number ones. Sundowns in the last four years had three to four foreign goalkeepers on their books, Pirates as well, and Chiefs.

"So if you have the Big Three using foreign keepers, you start having other teams adopting that and then 50% of the clubs use same methods, then we gonna have problems."

With Egypt having a rule of not allowing local teams to sign foreign keepers due to the same challenge, Baloyi doesn't think PSL is ready for such decision.

"Egypt don't have this rule for nothing and sometimes you have to be selfish as a country, think about your own. Must we have that? Not now, I don't think we ready, I think we need to develop goalkeeper coaches. We don't have proper goalkeeping academies. The world has changed so much and we need to move with times.

"So we gonna have this problem for a long time because it is only now that PSL clubs are taking goalkeeper coaches seriously. To have best goalkeepers you need to have proper coaches and it takes four years to achieve that and we don't even have goalkeeper courses.

"We need to find solutions because Itumeleng Khune's generation is fading away.

"I believe a short term solution is to naturalize foreign keepers that have never played international football while we sort our goalkeeping problems. It's a big challenge and we don't talk about it even at national team level, we need to talk about it to find solutions," he added.
