Richards Bay Coach: Sundowns Didn't Cut Us Open

Richards Bay assistant coach Ronnie Gabriel says he's proud of their "top notch" performance against Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Natal Rich Boys extended their winless run to 11 matches in the DStv Premiership after going down 1-0 to the champions on Tuesday afternoon.

The men from KwaZulu-Natal did look a lot livelier in the second half and could have pulled level if not for the heroics of Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

"I think today was an outstanding performance by our group, we put on a good show today, we didn't disappoint in terms of the effort, in terms of commitment, creating goal-scoring chances, dominating play for the majority part of the game," Gabriel told SuperSport after the game.

"I think we applied ourselves top notch today, it was top notch performance, the only thing that was missing was a goal.

"That has been the story of our season, week in and week out we've been creating numerous goal-scoring chances and it's just that extra quality in the final third that could have earned us extra points this season. But all in all a fantastic display by the group.

"I was very happy with the performance, I'm sure the supporters will also be happy with this performance, although the result did not go our way but in terms of the play, fighting for the badge and fighting for the team it was top notch."

Gabriel felt the goal they conceded was not due to Sundowns' cutting the open at the back.

"If you back at the goal, the goal itself they didn't cut us open, it was a deflection of our player, it fell on the foot of the opposition and he tapped it away," he added.

"So it was not a case whereby they cut us open or they played through us or in between us, it was just a matter of a deflection that fell on their path.

"But on the other end we cut them, opened them up, on three, four occasions, we had a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, the goal just refused to go in the back of the net but we have to accept it, move on, the next game is coming soon, we have to prepare and be ready for the next encounter."
