Pirates Coach Admits 'Challenge' Of Facing Chiefs

Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has suggested that Kaizer Chiefs' wins in the past two Soweto derbies were not exciting to the spectators and cautioned referees to be at the "required level".

Chiefs completed a league double over Pirates this season after winning both encounters by narrow 1-0 margins and also extended their winning run against the Buccaneers to five matches.

However, Riveiro, when asked what lessons he would take from those defeats suggested that there was not much difference between the sides and the games could have ended 0-0 and this time around they want to show "a better version" of themselves.

"Well, we played them three times, we beat them once in the penalty round, the same way you critique us when we lost the final (in the Black Label Cup), please don't forget that we beat them once at least," Riveiro said in a press conference ahead of the Nedbank Cup semi-final clash over the weekend.

"All of the games in my opinion, the three games we played against this opposition were almost pretty much the same and should be ending probably in a 0-0 and not really good games for the spectators, that is maybe the sad part.

"With not so much goal chances or at least moments where you can really have joy, very tight and decided by details, so what I want for the next one is hopefully to show a better version of ourselves," he said.

The Spanish mentor went on and said because it's a knockout game, the clash could be tight again and decided by small details and also cautioned match officials on the day to be in the "required level" because that was not the case in the previous games.

"That's what I can control or try to control, that we can play with the passion that we're used to playing in the scenario like that, it's a challenge for us because if we do it I'm sure that we can find that joy," he continued.

"And hopefully, because it's a knockout game, there's gonna be moments of uncertainty, details. The last time we had to play 30, 35 minutes in numerical inferiority where probably should be the opposition playing with numerical inferiority for one action early in the game after 20, 25 minutes.

"Also the role of the referee in these types of games is crucial so I hope the referee is in the level that is required and in the recent games it was not like that," he claimed.
