Ramoreboli: How To Slay A Giant In The Nedbank Cup

Ramoreboli: How To Slay A Giant In The Nedbank Cup

The two lower division clubs playing against Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs in the Nedbank Cup this weekend have been given advice by a man who knows what it takes to slay a giant.

Over 10 years ago, Morena Ramoreboli was at the helm of Maluti FET College that recorded a victory many still talk about today. On an incredible afternoon in 2013, Maluti put on a show that many of the Buccaneers' faithful will never forget.

A 4-1 thumping cut deep in the hearts of Pirates and Ramoreboli spoke to the Siya crew about how important it is to properly plan against a big team, because motivation can only take you so far.

"The Nedbank Cup is the only cup that allows Premier (Soccer) League to play against teams from amateur leagues, so it's a motivation to those smaller teams. We should always understand that motivation does not always win you games, but motivation contributes to the planning you have for you to win matches. You still need to prepare for those teams and profile and analyse better to see how they play and how you should deny them an opportunity to play their own game," Ramoreboli said to the Siya crew.

"Planning is very important. For the teams that have been winning against bigger, the first thing has always been the issue of how they prepare for those teams. If you check, there are those teams who go to extra time against the bigger teams and then they concede towards the end of the game they concede. That's when experience and fatigue comes. The most important thing about preparing for these games is that you don't really need to talk much about the opponents because that's a period where you need to show your players how strong and how good they are. You need to try give your players the belief and confidence that they can do the work."

Pirates face ABC Motsepe League side Crystal Lake FC at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday, while Amakhosi host Motsepe Foundation Championship team Milford at FNB Stadium on Sunday.

On their way to winning the Nedbank Cup last season, Pirates beat three lower division opponents. Despite the defeat to Maluti in 2013, the Buccaneers have generally managed to get the better of lower division sides, but the story has not really been the same for Chiefs.
