Three previous winners are on the shortlist for the 2015 award, while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Sadio Mane could win it for the first time.
Fans can vote for their favourite until 30 November, and the winner will be announced on 11 December.
The award was initially launched as the BBC African Sports Star of the Year in 1992 and was won by two non-footballers in 1993 and 1998, as well as by the Zambian national team for their heroics in 1994 after 18 players died in a plane accident the previous year.
While no South African has ever lifted the award, Nigeria and Ghana both hold five previous winners. Two Al Ahly stars have proved that you can win the award even when playing in Africa.
