Gallants Secure Much-Needed Win Over CT City

Gallants Secure Much-Needed Win Over CT City

Marumo Gallants struck late in the second half to secure a 2-1 win over Cape Town City on Saturday evening.

DStv Premiership

Result: Marumo Gallants 2-1 Cape Town City

Date: 29 October 2022

Venue: Peter Mokaba Stadium

Citizens coach Erik Tinkler made one change from the win over Chippa United, as Nathan Fasika returned in defence as Thato Mokeke missed out on the day.

Gallants, meanwhile, were eager to get back on the winning trail although they had not beaten their Western Cape counterparts in the top-flight.

The Citizens enjoyed a bit of the ball in the early stages of the first half, although clear-cut chances were hard to come by in the opening 20 minutes.

Tinkler was then forced to alter his side with 31 minutes played, as Fasika was forced with an injury after landing awkwardly and was replaced by Keanu Cupido.

Just minutes after young Luke Daniels missed a chance for City, Gallants got the breakthrough in the 41st minute thanks to Ranga Chivaviro, who had just replaced the injured Sibusiso Sibeko.

Tinkler looked to his bench for inspiration in the second half and introduce young Jaedin Rhodes, Mpho Makola and Wade Lekay as they went in search of an equaliser.

Lyle Lakay looked to get the Citizens back on track with an effort from distance on 77 minutes, but his strike was turned away by Gallants shot-stopper Washington Arubi.

The away side got their reward with five minutes left on the clock as the substitutions made the desired effect as Lekay found the back of the net after being set up by Makola.

With the game seemingly headed for a stalemate, Chivaviro rescued maximum points for the Limpopo side with a goal in the 94th minute to send the side up to 11th spot, while City drop to 12th.
