Komphela Talks Rulani's 'Earnings' At Sundowns

Komphela Talks Rulani's 'Earnings' At Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns first team coach Steve Komphela has hailed head coach Rulani Mokwena as a "genius" for how he's handling his position so far.

Mokwena is yet to lose a match in all competitions since he was made the sole head coach but Komphela says the greatness of a coach does not lie in his tactical ability but has to to more with his emotional intelligence.

"First of all the guy is unbelievably intelligent, he's brains, brains, brains. You never get into coaching and succeed at a young age without brains, he's genius," Komphela told journalists at the Nedbank Cup quater-final draw.

"And unfortunately modern management is not only about the capability to do your job, to be a great technician is about managing the rest of the other dynamics around you."

Komphela, who had a near three-year spell at Kaizer Chiefs, continued and expanded that what happens behind the scenes is more important than technical matters, especially at big clubs.

"One friend of mind Roger de Sa once said, '90 percent of our earnings, 90 percent of what the coach earns is about everything that happens around and only ten percent is about what they do on the pitch'," he went on.

"And I think coach Rulani has mastered that, very calm, calculative, he sees things in time and the wisdom and the ability to respond appropriately and make no mistake it's not easy to be head coach at Sundowns.

"In fact any big team but managing that is one of the primary objectives. You have to be very careful because whatever you say goes and unfortunately modern world what you say (is) gone and if you want to rectify it gets even worse," he said.

"So you gotta be careful what you're going to say, think about it before you say and he has mastered that," he added
