Downs Coach Highlights Controversial VAR Decisions

Downs Coach Highlights Controversial VAR Decisions

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena has given his thoughts on VAR after it played a big role in his side's CAF Champions League first leg semi-final against Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca.

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) has been used in the Champions League semi-finals and had a say in the first leg semi-final against Wydad, with Peter Shalulile's goal being ruled offside.

Both Neo Maema and Marcelo Allende were sent off after their challenges were checked by VAR, but Mokwena has no qualms about the system.

Sundowns take on Wydad in the second leg clash at Loftus on Saturday afternoon and VAR could come into play again in arguably the club's most important match of the season yet.

"There were two points with regards to VAR for me, which are important to highlight. Like with any other new way of doing something, there are going to be teething problems and mistakes. They come only because you are adapting to using something new. Of course, we have to accept that VAR is something new. And because we are trying to find something new and the best way of it working, we are improving our capacity and recourses needed for it to be used in the best of its capacity. We have to put that in our minds," Mokwena said during a press conference held at Chloorkop, Sundowns' headquarters, on Thursday.

"So, mistakes might not be because the person is deliberately making mistakes, but it might be because we are one or two camera angles short of being able to say this is exactly the decision VAR should be supporting. It's probably even higher in Africa than it is in Europe. The margin of error becomes widened. Then, because behind the VAR camera and technology is a human being, the gap for a mistake in that call becomes even wider. So, those are the two things we need to highlight when it comes to VAR and not go too much into that space because mistakes are going to happen."
