Junior Khanye suggested a name for the coach he would like to see added to the Kaizer Chiefs technical team as an assistant.
For their next match against Golden Arrows on Saturday, Chiefs will have a new man in charge of their technical bench, following this week's appointment of Cavin Johnson as the head coach in place of Molefi Ntseki who has been relieved of his duties due to disappointing results.
It has been for some time that Khanye – a footballer-turned-analyst, suggested that Johnson be considered for the Chiefs role, and while many on social media had previously questioned the suggestion, the Soweto giants have finally decided on the former Al Ahly assistant coach to lead the team amid on an interim basis.
Johnson will have Dillon Sheppard as his assistant, while Arthur Zwane has been redeployed to his previous role in the development as confirmed by the club, and Khanye has suggested that Dan 'Dance' Malesela should also be considered for an assistant coaching role.
The Good
"I spoke about this appointment a long time ago and people swore at me, and others said I was biased. All sorts of things were said about me when I first spoke about this appointment around 2017 or 2018. I would like to applaud Kaizer Chiefs for appointing Cavin Johnson as the team's head coach going forward. It is something that should have been done long time ago. Like I have been saying all along, Cavin Johnson is one of the coaches who understand South African footballers very well. He has got a solid background and experience in this game, having been there when the School of Excellence came into being. Dillon Sheppard, who is now his assistant, was still playing with the likes of Mbulelo Mabizela and many others from those days. Chiefs would be heading in the right direction by now if the club had appointed Cavin Johnson when I first suggested that he be hired by the club. All I am appealing for is for the club to sign players for him that he wants. This is the coach that got the best out of players like Masibusane Zongo, Mahlatse Makudubela, (Robert) Ng'ambi, (Tshepo) Gumede and many others," said Khanye.
The Bad
"I am hoping that the coach will get all the support he needs, and I don't expect the club to expect him to win trophies with players like (Jasond) Gonzalez. Gonzalez, Pule Mmodi, (Tebogo) Potsane and them are ordinary players. You can't sign (Sibongiseni) Mthethwa when you already have Yusuf Maart, (Siyethemba) Sithebe and (Lehlogonolo) Matlou – those players are similar in how they play. That was an unnecessary signing. Also, the club will need to be patient with the coach," Johnson added.
The Ugly
"I would like to appeal to the fans to be patient with the coach as he will be doing everything in his power to change the fortunes of the team. Yes, I understand their frustrations because Chiefs is a very big brand but please they must be patient with the coach and the results will come," he said.
"Appoint Dan Malesela as Cavin Johnson's assistant"
"I would like to see the club appointing Dan Malesela as Cavin Johnson's assistant. I know that he is currently the head coach at Baroka FC but I would like to see him join Chiefs to assist in the restructuring. Dillon is fine in his role and Dan Dance can be appointed as a second assistant. They should appoint Sudesh Singh as the technical director and Farouk Khan as the Head of Development. Someone like Zipho Dlangalala, who I know is at Maritzburg United at present, can be brought in as the Head of Scouting. Someone like Floyd Mogale should also be considered for a similar role in the scouting department. Lastly, I would like to see Cavin Johnson being given the job permanently and handed a three-year contract," concluded Johnson.
How will Chiefs do under Johnson?
