The race to the see who will finish the season as the DStv Premiership top goal scorer gets more interesting by the week and this week's Friday Debate asks who should walk away with the award.
Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa sits top of the chart with 15 goals, scoring nine league goals in the space of a month-and-a-half to add onto the six he netted while he was on loan to Moroka Swallows during the first half of the season.
Boosted by the five goals he scored recently in a victory over Polokwane City, Stellenbosch FC striker Iqraam Rayners sits right behind Mabasa on 14 goals,
Mamelodi Sundowns forward Lucas Ribeiro Costa is third on 13 goals, but limped off in the side's goalless draw with Golden Arrows during the week, so it's unclear if he will be available for selection.
Lennox Bacela - former Pirates striker
I think Mabasa is going to take it, looking at the games Pirates have left and the way they have been playing. If you look at the upcoming games Pirates have against Richards Bay and TS Galaxy, I think Mabasa can get a goal or two from those two games. I think the final game of the season against SuperSport might be tough. If Mabasa gets another goal or two in the upcoming games, then I think that's the Golden Boot for him. It's going to be tough for Ribeiro because Sundowns have been changing their line-up and he is not guaranteed that he will start in all the remaining games. In terms of form, Pirates have been showing progress in terms of getting goals and the attacking football they have been playing has been great to watch.
Thulani Nombali - Kaizer Chiefs supporter
It's going to be a two-horse race between Mabasa and Rayners. Mabasa is one goal up and stands the best chance of taking the Golden Boot. He is more clinical. I know Rayners scored five in one goal, but if you look at the goals he has scored, it shows that he focuses more on scoring than assisting, as compared Rayners. Rayners has scored 14 in the league and has got eight assists in all competitions. He has got half of what he has scored as assists. It means he is more of a team player than Mabasa, who is more of a goal scorer. In terms of being clinical, Mabasa looks more sharp. But anything is possible at this moment. All the three players, including Ribeiro, have shown that they are capable of scoring a hat-trick. I think Mabasa is going to come out tops
Diego Brown - former Stellenbosch FC winger
I'm going for Mabasa because he hitting form at the right time. Also, if you look at their overall team achievements up till now, they are all doing well. Pirates are in a good space at the moment. Even if Mabasa is not scoring, he is playing well. He will definitely finish with the Golden Boot. That's nothing against Rayners. He has done well for Stellenbosch, but I feel Mabasa will take this one.
