As Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Bidvest Wits prepare for CAF competitions, Soccer Laduma acquired useful information on some of the rules that the four clubs will need to take into consideration in their planning.
Chiefs, Bucs, Downs Wits' CAF Participation Confirmed
The four PSL clubs will represent South Africa when participating in the continental competitions next year.
As the reigning Absa Premiership champions, Sundowns will play in the CAF Champions League, while Chiefs have qualified for the same competition by virtue of being the league's runners-ups last season.
Pirates will play in the Confederation Cup for winning the Nedbank Cup, while Wits have qualified for the competition by virtue of finishing third in the league last season.
According to information acquired from the league, CAF rules state:
"3. A player who is qualified to play in CAF Champions League must:
a) Possess a license in his club issued by its national association and registered in his federation on 15th January of the year of the competition at the latest for the 1st period of registration and on 10th August of the year of the competition, at the latest, for the second period of registration.
b) Possess a license issued by CAF.
c) Be qualified regularly in the national championship of the country for the club engaged in CAF Champions League.
d) Live in the country of the club for which he is playing."
Pirates reached the final of the Champions League last year, which was the highest achievement by a South African club in a CAF competition in recent years.
