Result: Orlando Pirates 4-0 Disciples FC

Date: 23 August 2024

Venue: Orlando Stadium

Pirates made five changes to the side that drew nil-nil in the first-leg, as Tshegofatso Mabasa, Kabelo Dlamini, Thalente Mbatha, Thabiso Monyane and Thabiso Sesane were all brought back.

The Buccaneers showed sense of urgency from the word go and after threatening, on nine minutes, Mabasa eventually opened the scoring with a volley after a good turn in the box.

As Jose Riveiro's charges remained on the front foot, Mabasa almost doubled their lead on 20 minutes with another volley from the edge of the box that was repelled by the Disciples goalkeeper.

Relebohile Mofokeng eventually made it 2-0 for Pirates four minutes later with a tidy finish in the box after he exchanged passes with Patrick Maswanganyi.

With their tails up, Maswanganyi got the third goal for the Buccaneers just before half-hour mark, with a curling shot from range that found the top corner.

The Soweto giants pinned Disciples in their own half and were threatening to run riot, as they went to the interval with a commanding 3-0 and by the same scoreline on aggregate.

The game was a bit more measured early in the second stanza, as Pirates sent a message with a defensive change from the break after Makhehlene Makhaula replaced Maswanganyi.

However, around the hour-mark, Mabasa thought he had made it 4-0 for the hosts, as he scored from close-range but the goal was disallowed for offside.

The Spanish tactician rested Mabasa just after that, as Evidence Makgopa was given a run and with 15 minutes to go, Karim Kimvuidi also entered the fray in place of Dlamini for fresh legs in attack.

Disciples could not provide any contest for Pirates in the dying, who were threatening to run riot and Kimvuidi added the fourth in stoppages with a strike from a rebound.

The Soweto giants cruised to the group stage play-offs and will face the winner between Jwaneng Galaxy and African Stars.

Here's how they lined up:

Orlando Pirates: Chaine, Monyane, Sesane, Ndah, Hotto, Dlamini, Mbatha, Saleng, Mofokeng, Maswanganyi, Mabasa

Subs: Buthelezi, Maela, Sibisi, Timm, Rasebotja, Kimvuidi, Makhaula, Moleleki, Makgopa.
