Bafana Bafana could be set for more high-quality matches as early as next month with word that SAFA are in talks to arrange a four-nations tournament to be hosted by Algeria during the next FIFA break.
The side coached by Hugo Broos were impressive in the recent Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d'Ivoire, finishing third and picking up a bronze medal – the national team's best-ever finish at the tournament since 2000.
Siya sources have informed the crew that while a friendly international with Algeria, who were eliminated in the group stage of the Afcon, had already been the subject of advanced talks, more teams were likely to be added.
The fact that Bafana did so well during the continental competition could very well be a drawcard, especially against the North Africans.
Algeria are still considered a powerhouse despite what happened at the Afcon because it wasn't long ago that they were crowned champions, in 2019 to be exact.
With the majority of FA presidents gathered in Abidjan for the final between hosts Cote d'Ivoire and Nigeria last weekend, it was the perfect opportunity to further cement these plans. It would be the sort of opposition Broos wants for Bafana as they build up to World Cup qualifiers this year where they are in the same group as Nigeria, Rwanda, Benin, Lesotho and Zimbabwe.
The match against Algeria is all but confirmed, but whether the hosts will be able to tie down more national teams in the coming days remains to be seen.
