The Argentine and his club teammates crashed out of the MLS Cup following three playoff matches against Atlanta United.
After winning the opening tie, the Herons suffered a 2-1 loss in the second playoff and a 3-2 defeat in the decider as they were unable to add to their MLS Supporters' Shield triumph.
The loss for the David Beckham-owned outfit sent shockwaves throughout North America, and perhaps even came as a surprise to Messi, who was said to have made his way straight down the tunnel after the disappointing final result.
His actions have since been questioned and criticised by United States legend Landon Donovan.
"I don't like that. Just shake their hands and say congratulations. Messi walked right off the field," he said on the Unfiltered Soccer podcast.
"Maybe in the locker room they came out and said congrats or whatever, and by the way, your fans are out there too.
"At least congratulate them on a great season and thank them for all the support they've had."
