LALIGA: Mbappe Helps Real Close The Gap On Barca

LALIGA: Mbappe Helps Real Close The Gap On Barca

Girona 3-0 Real Madrid

Real Madrid moved to within two points of FC Barcelona with a 3-0 victory away to Girona on Saturday night.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti made a host of changes from the midweek loss, as Brahim Diaz, Arder Guler Ferland Mendu, Luka Modric and  Aurelien Tchouameni all returned to the line-up.

There was great incentive for the reigning league champions after league leaders Barcelona dropped points in the earlier kick-off.

Los Blancos got the opening goal in the 36th minute as Jude Bellingham pounced on a loose ball in the box and thumped the ball beyond goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga.

The lead was doubled ten minutes into the second period as Bellingham turned provider to play in Guler who showed great composure to slot into the far corner.

Kylian Mbappe got his name on the score-sheet in the 63rd minute after latching onto Modric's pass before firing into the far corner for his sixth league goal.

Real Betis 2-2 Barcelona

Barcelona missed the chance to extend their lead at the top of the table after a 2-2 away to Real Betis.

Coach Hansi Flick made just one change from the midweek win, as Robert Lewandowski returned to the starting line up as Ferran Torres dropped to the bench despite scoring on Tuesday evening.

Meanwhile, Vitor Roque, who is on loan from Barcelona, started in the Betis attack alongside Giovani Lo Celso while Carlos Guirao and Jesus Rodriguez dropped to the bench.

The Catalan giants eventually got the breakthrough in the 39th minute when Lewandowski marked his return to the line-up by turning home a cross from Jules Kounde after some neat passing.

Betis were awarded a penalty after the hour mark for Frenkie de Jong's foul on Roque, with coach Flick sent off after expressing his displeasure with the decision before Lo Celso stepped up to convert the spot-kick.

Barcelona thought they had won the game with Torres' goal in the 82nd minute after being set up by Lamine Yamal.

However, Betis bagged the equaliser in the 94th minute after Assane Diao got on the end of Aitor Ruibal's cross to rescue a point for the home side.
