2017 AFCON - Group A
Result: Gabon 1-1 Guinea-Bassau
Date: 14 January 2017
Venue: Stade d'Angondjé
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's Gabon had to settle for a point, after they drew 1-1 with Guinea-Bassau in their opening Africa Cup of Nations clash.
Guinea-Bassau looked livelier in the opening exchanges, with Zezinho seeing a lot of the ball in the middle of the park.
Bassua did a good job of keeping Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang quiet for most of the opening stanza, although clear-cut chances were hard to come by for both nations.
The first real chance of the half arrived just before the break as Guinea-Bassua's Toni Silva volleyed just wide of the upright from close range.
Nonetheless, the sides went into the break with the score level at 0-0, while both goalkeepers were forced into any saves.
However, Gabon broke the deadlock five minutes after the restart, as Aubameyang netted the first goal of tournament with a finish from close range.
The Borussia Dortmund star had the chance to double his side's lead in the 69th minute, but his close range volley sailed over the crossbar.
Guinea-Bassua were no pushovers and nearly found themselves level after 75 minute as Rudinilson rifled an effort inches wide of the upright.
The equaliser arrived on the stroke of full-time, as Soares headed home Zezinho's cross to silence the hosts.
