The former Real Madrid star had been a free agent since November 2024 after his contract at Fluminense was terminated due to a fallout with the club's head coach.
On Thursday, Marcelo took to social media to announce his decision, posting a video compilation of some of his most memorable moments as a footballer.
"At 18, Real Madrid knocked on my door and I arrived here. Now, I can proudly say that I am a true Madrileño," Marcelo said in a video on his social media, according to BBC.
"Sixteen seasons, 25 titles, five Champions Leagues, one of the captains and so many magical nights at the Bernabéu. What a journey!
"My journey as a player ends here, but I still have so much to give to football. Thank you for everything."
Reacting to the announcement, Real issued a statement on their website to thank the left-back for his massive contribution to the club.
"Following Marcelo's announcement that he is retiring as a professional football player, Real Madrid CF would like to express its gratitude and affection to him. Marcelo belongs to the history of Real Madrid and is one of the great legends of the club and of world football," wrote the Spanish giants.
Marcelo won 25 trophies with Real, with only Luka Modric having won more, with 28 major titles.
