Los Blancos are said to be feeling the pinch after splurging on the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner, who joined the club as a free agent in the latest transfer window.
The French forward's arrival at the Santiago Bernabeu, after letting his contract with Paris Saint-Germain run down, has reportedly not lived up to the expectations set by the club's hefty investment in him.
According to French journalist Romain Molina, insiders at the club have voiced their discontent regarding Mbappe's performances.
Speaking on YouTube channel Colinterview, Molina stated: "They regret bringing him in. I guarantee that. I have spoken about it off [the record]. It hasn't been at all what they were expecting. It was a whim of [Real Madrid president Florentino] Perez. It was only Perez that wanted him. He has always liked the big players. He also has a father/son-like relationship with him [Mbappe]."
Despite a slow start to the season, Mbappe has managed to find the net seven times in 11 appearances across all competitions, contributing one assist.
However, this output falls short of the high standards Real Madrid expected from their marquee signing.
"The club are gutted, firstly with his level, which is not at all at the expected levels. In the dressing room it isn't great – that isn't necessarily Mbappe's fault, though," he added.
He went on to suggest that the lack of a proper pre-season has hindered Mbappe's performance: "I think Real have made a big mistake. He didn't have a pre-season; he played instantly, unlike (Jude) Bellingham. When you see how he is physically at 25, you can't explain it to me. The physical drop-off that he has had at 25, I have never seen that."
