Mngqithi Backed For Downs Head Coaching Role

Mngqithi Backed For Downs Head Coaching Role

Manqoba Mngqithi has been backed for the Mamelodi Sundowns head coaching role by someone who knows him quite well, Siyanda Zwane.

Sundowns have been linked with quite a few coaches since Rulani Mokwena parted ways with the club and all of them have been foreigners. Mngqithi is currently the one leading the technical team, with Steve Komphela alongside him as senior coach.

While the club has not come out to confirm Mngqithi's exact role, it appears the former Golden Arrows and AmaZulu mentor will take charge of the team going into the new season and former Sundowns player Zwane feels he is more than capable of leading the Tshwane giants to success.

"I think the team is in good and capable hands. A coach of Manqoba's calibre, alongside Steve Komphela, is capable of bringing the club more success. I don't see a reason why they should bring another coach on board. I think the main reason they brought coach Steve Komphela is that they want them to work together. He deserves this chance and, as a coach of his magnitude, I don't think he would want to be an assistant to someone," Zwane said to the Siya crew.

"More than anything, Sundowns just want a coach who can conquer Africa. They want someone who can go and replicate what coach Pitso Mosimane did. Winning the Premiership is something normal for them, but the most important thing for the club is the Champions League and competing in the (FIFA) Club World Cup. I think he is capable of taking Sundowns to new heights. I trust him, I worked with him and I know his qualities as a coach.

"He is a father figure, he is calm and he is emotionally intelligent. He has good leadership skills and good man-management qualities. He is a quality coach and I don't think the Sundowns fans are afraid. I don't think they want another coach. I think they are okay having coach Manqoba and coach Steve taking the team forward."

Sundowns are currently in Austria on their pre-season tour, with new signing Kobamelo Kodisang as part of the squad. They are set to play German lower division club SV Sandhausen today.
