The Spaniard is still without a team following his departure from the Red Devils as a free agent at the end of last season.
According to The Sun, however, the 20-time English champions are "pleading" with the experienced shot-stopper to return to the club on a short-term contract.
This is believed to be due to the expectation that Onana, the current No. 1 at Old Trafford, will be representing Cameroon at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in January.
United did sign Turkey international Altay Bayindir in the previous transfer window, but he is yet to feature for the team, despite Onana having endured a difficult start to life in England.
De Gea, 32, spent 12 years in Manchester following his arrival from Atletico Madrid in 2011, making an impressive 545 appearances across all competitions in the process.
