As the days go by since the 2022/23 season ended, the number of coaches linked with Kaizer Chiefs is increasing as Arthur Zwane has become under added pressure after another unsuccessful campaign with no trophies won.
One of the famous names to be added to the growing list of the Soweto giants targets is Pitso Mosimane, who has officially resigned from Saudi Arabian club Al-Ahli after he successfully promoted them to the Premier League.
After being linked with Tanzanian club Young Africans' coach Nasreddine Nabi, Amakhosi are believed to be also considering bringing Mosimane back to the DStv Premiership after his succesful spells in Egypt with Al Ahly and in Saudi Arabia respectively.
While taking nothing away from Mosimane for his pedigree and achievements, former Chiefs defender Rodney Thobejane believes that Zwane should be given more time at Amakhosi.
The Good
"When you talk about coach Pitso you are talking about someone who is in a league of his own. He is a very good coach and take nothing away from that fact but I feel that people need to understand that football is something else and there are a lot of factors that need to be considered before associating Pitso with Chiefs. We need to look at whether his philosophy and style of play will suit Chiefs in terms of the club's culture and the players that are there. Pitso is a very good coach and I am saying this with 100 surety. For me, Zwane is also a good coach but luck hasn't been on his side, unfortunately. In 90% of the games that Chiefs played under him, the team dominated in my opinion but he was unlucky in terms of the results. He was supposed to win those games, but as it sometimes happens in football, he was punished in the end. Yes, Pitso is experienced and he has won a lot of trophies in his career and he is a former Bafana Bafana coach but my problem about South African football is that we don't support our own," said Thobejane.
The Bad
"As South Africans, we need to learn to support our coaches. We shouldn't be all about destroying our own. The very same Pitso that people are talking about now, I keep making an example about him from his early days at Sundowns. Do you remember there was a time when the police were called to stop the supporters that were calling for Pitso to be removed from his position as the club's head coach? But today, the same supporters do not remember that because he went on to succeed with the club and won trophies," Thobejane added.
The Ugly
"In South Africa, we need to learn to be patient if we want to improve our football. What if next season will be Zwane's season to do well at Chiefs. We don't know that. Yes, they can bring Pitso on board if that is what is needed but my wish would be for him to work with Arthur. But Pitso might say he wants to work with his own technical team. It is not like Arthur is a bad coach and my plea to the club would be to give him another season on two to continue working on what he has been trying to achieve," he said.
Chiefs Should Be Patient
"Big clubs from overseas have taken years building their brands and I'm talking about teams like Barcelona and PSG and look where they are now. For them (Chiefs) also, it will take some time to be back to where they used to be and they should be patient. This is life and life is like a wheel, it's rolling. Today it might be about me and tomorrow it might be you. There is only one person who knows already who is going to win the league next season and that is the Almighty God. We cannot deny that and whether we like it or not, only God knows who is going to win the league and I think after his first season Arthur has learned some lessons and I wish the club can respect him and allow him to continue," concluded Thobejane.
Should Chiefs Appoint Pitso Or Keep Zwane?
