The race to sign one of SA's emerging stars could be a potential photo-finish with the Big Three keen and the Siya crew told there are clubs from Europe watching!
Indications are that Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns are all involved in a tussle to sign youngster Ashley Cupido of Cape Town Spurs.
Cupido, 22, came within minutes of leading the Urban Warriors to automatic promotion from the Motsepe Foundation Championship, only for them to lose out to Polokwane City on the last day of the season last Sunday.
Spurs have gained a spot in the relegation/promotion play-offs, but Soccer Laduma has been informed that the club's main hitman is attracting interest from three of Gauteng's biggest clubs. He has ended the campaign as the league's leading goal scorer, with 15 matches in 29 games this season.
As reported by this publication, the Urban Warriors are unlikely to part ways with their top performer, unless they receive a multi-million rand offer for his services – something Chiefs, Pirates and most certainly Sundowns are able to do.
In addition to local interest, indications from sources are that an unknown European team has been alerted to the forward's talents.
Cupido has made it known that he would like to remain at Spurs provided they are promoted to the topflight. However, with promotion not a given at this point, it remains to be seen if the Parow-based outfit cash in on their young star or whether they hold onto him if they can attain promotion via the play-offs.
