Luis Goncalves, who is Cristiano Ronaldo's former coach, had been offered to Kaizer Chiefs, Soccer Laduma has been reliably informed.
The 51-year-old UEFA Pro Licence holder even went for an interview at Naturena before the club decided on appointing Stuart Baxter in 2021 for a second spell. At the time, Amakhosi had parted ways with Gavin Hunt.
However, the Soweto giants felt that Goncalves wasn't the right man for the job at the time and he went on to have another interview with Moroka Swallows, before going on to coach GD Interclube Luanda in Angola last year.
"It is true that Luis Goncalves had been offered to Chiefs at some point in his career, although he didn't get the deal. He is Cristiano Ronaldo's former coach at the academy. The year was 2021 when he went to Chiefs for an interview and he was very impressed with what he saw at the Village in Naturena," said a source.
"He was very impressed with the facilities at Chiefs and said some clubs in Europe do not have the kind of facilities that Chiefs have. He is a coach with a good track record and some of the players at Manchester City came through him in the development. However, Chiefs decided on another coach. He (Goncalves) also went to Swallows for an interview and the club wanted to make him a Technical Director, but that was not what he wanted at the time as he preferred to be the head coach," the source added.
