The South African Football Association has sadly announced the passing away of former top referee Ian McLeod.
The 63-year-old was admitted to hospital last week, and on Thursday, 26 October, the South African football community lost a very important figure in our local game. McLeod officiated at the FIFA Confederations Cup in 1997, the 1998 FIFA World Cup, and the 1996 and 1998 Africa Cups of Nations.
The supporters have sent through their heartfelt condolences, and shared some of their fondest memories of the former referee.

"Best we ever had, may his soul rest in peace." – mjaji92
"Indeed we are saddened by the passing of Ian as a nation. He was a good referee who took charge on the field and I will remember him by his refereeing signals. May his soul R.I.P." – langutanithom@gmail.com
"I vividly remember him officiating in a cup game between Sundowns and Chiefs around 1997/98 and from that day I've always maintained that Ian McLeod is the best referee SA has ever had. He'd reprimand players with so much humility and it was always funny when he'd give players red cards with a huge smile. May his soul rest in eternal peace and his ever-present smile will surely be missed." – Matome_Kay
"A man who never entertained Kaizer Chiefs' brown envelopes. A no-nonsense match official. RIP 'Mr red card', you will always be remembered." – Mr-Brown-envelope
