Solid Defence Key To Bucs’ Resurgence

Orlando Pirates’ Defence Has Improved

By Soccer Laduma - Sep 13, 2017 03:21 PM

Orlando Pirates have had a notable improvement in their defence in the matches played by the team so far this season.

The Buccaneers are in second place on the Absa Premiership log and tied with Maritzburg United on seven points at the summit of the log. Bucs have won two and drawn one of their opening three matches of the campaign.

Under Milutin Sredojevic and his technical team, there has been a notable improvement in the team’s defence as the side has conceded only one goal from their three matches.

Apart from Pirates, Maritzburg United and Cape Town City are the only other two teams that have conceded a goal each from their matches. Wayne Sandilands has emerged as the number one goalkeeper for Bucs this season, with the former Mamelodi Sundowns shot-stopper proving to be solid in goal for Sredojevic’s side.

Innocent Maela has started very well in defence for the Soweto giants, while the likes of Ntsikelelo Nyauza, Thabo Matlaba and Gladwin Shitolo have also been impressive.

Last season Bucs conceded a whopping 40 goals from their 30 league games, which led to the team finishing outside the top eight. Sredojevic has emphasised the importance for the team to pick up the points so as to get the team to the top.

I think Nyauza and Shitolo are really working hard at the back. They are a little bit faster and smarter than Jele and Gcaba, they are showing great partnership.

Without a doubt and the tragedy of it all is that Pirates don't have reliable centre backs or those they do have aren't getting playing minutes, in the past season alone we managed to bundle all deals involving the signing of centre-backs with the bizarre goings and comings of Chabalala and Okwousa . YES we have managed to gather points however let us be honest none of the teams we have managed to collect points from have truly tested the resolve of this make-shift defence the same way as would any of the teams that made the top 8. Pirates don't have a defensive spine that can stand the test of time or one to challenge for any title YET!

I'm eagerly waiting for the introduction of chabalala in that defence, I'm not impressed with the inclusion of jele, the guy has failed us last season he should sit on the stand and watch how football is played...

That's true & very good up so far, given the fact that 25 % of the players in lineup are new players while other 15% been those who never really played.so in all I'd say hat of to everyone nt forgetting the coach also.
