Orlando Pirates boast great disciplinary record
Orlando Pirates had the best disciplinary record in the Absa Premiership last season. We take a look at the teams that joined them in the top five.
Kjell Jonevret’s team may have finished outside of the top eight for the first time in the PSL era, but at least they’ll be able to boast about keeping cool heads when it came to encounters with the various officials that took charge of their games throughout the season.
The Buccaneers side was shown just 38 yellow cards throughout the Absa Premiership season and had a player sent off just once, when Jackson Mabokgwane was sent off against Bidvest Wits on 15 February. However, Thabo Matlaba was also sent off in the Telkom Knockout semi-final against SuperSport United.
Nonetheless, the club will be happy about their disciplinary record, and so will Pitso Mosimane’s Mamelodi Sundowns, who were shown 39 yellow cards throughout the Absa Premiership season and saw one player get sent off (Fares Hachi against Bidvest Wits on 1 May).
Rounding off the top five are Chippa United (40 yellow cards and one red), Baroka FC (42 yellow cards and two reds) and Bloemfontein Celtic (46 yellow cards and one red).
The worst disciplinary record, on the other hand, was that of Maritzburg United’s. The Team of Choice were cautioned on 58 occasions and saw six players get sent off throughout the campaign.
