Maize Cup Final

Result: Free State Stars 0-1 Kaizer Chiefs

Date: 15 July 2017

Venue: Orkney’s James Motlatsi Stadium

George Lebese struck late in the second half to earn Kaizer Chiefs a 1-0 win over Free State Stars in the Maize Cup final.

It was an evenly contested affair in the opening 15 minutes as both sides took a while to get settled.

The passing from both sides were sloppy in the middle of the park, which led to a lack of chances in the respective 18-yard areas.

Chiefs started seeing more of the ball after 30 minutes with Keagan Buchanan having a bigger influence, although their decision-making was not up to par.

Stars were also finding it tough to carve out chances, as the likes of Sinethemba Jantjie and Nhlanhla Vilakazi were kept quiet by the Chiefs full-backs for most of the half.

Brilliant Khuzwayo came to Chiefs' rescue after the break, as he produced a superb save to keep out Danny Venter's free-kick from 25-yards out.

Khuzwayo was called upon once again in the 55th minute, as he pulled off another fine save to keep out Venter's low strole from distance.

Komphela opted for a change on the hour mark as Buchanan made way for Kgotso Malope on the hour mark, while Mitchell Katsvairo was introduced eight minutes later.

Chiefs eventually broke the deadlock in the 82nd minute as Joseph Molangoane picked out George Lebese, who rifled the ball into the bottom corner.

The AmaKhosi managed to hold out till the final whistle to clinch the win and the cup.

Here's how they lined up:

Stars: Oliver, Mbhele, Nkili, Mahamutsa, Ndlovu, Venter, Makhaula, Masehe, Jantjie, Vilakazi, Anas.

Chiefs: Khuzwayo, Moleko, Cardoso, Gordinho, Zulu, Buchanan, Meyiwa, Molangoane, Twala, Lebese, Shopane.

@lejapapii No wonder Pirates landed in position 11 and went on booze drinking spree a night before the Nedbank Cup Final, it has a stupid mentality like yours. Chiefs is assembling a good squad for the forthcoming psl matches. Wake up and smell the Coffee you slaggart
