Morrison's Strike Sends Bucs Second
Absa Premiership Report: Orlando Pirates v Ajax Cape Town 12 September 2017
A well-worked long throw-in allowed Mpho Makola to flick the ball from the near to the far post and found Bernard Morrison who volleyed the Buccaneers into an early 1-0 lead.
Ajax were struggling to deal with the Pirates set pieces and were almost punished again after Makola delivered a quality free kick into the box but Gabuza’s shot was blocked by Mario Booysen to deny Pirates a second goal.
The visitors pushed for an equaliser late in the first half but were unsuccessful as Pirates managed to take their 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
A quick counter attack from Orlando Pirates saw the Buccaneers turn defense into attack and they outnumbered the Ajax defense but the final shot was well stopped by Brandon Petersen.
Ajax Cape Town made a few attempts to challenge the Pirates backline but were unable to get a shot on target.
Gabuza on the other hand had no problem in finding the target as his two shots on goal found the back of the net but were both ruled to be offside to the disappointment of the home supporters.
Ajax had a late opportunity denied as a mostly inactive Wayne Sandilands was called to action through a strong header from Tashreeq Morris but the Pirates stopper did well to keep his side in the lead.
The Buccaneers repelled Ajax's late attack to earn a well-deserved 1-0 victory.
