Bafana Face Fight For SA-Born Arsenal Target
Bafana & Stuart Baxter May Struggle To Land Panagiotis Retsos
Stuart Baxter and Bafana Bafana will face a fight on their hands if they’re to persuade talented teenager, Panagiotis Retsos, to align himself with the South African national team.
The 19-year-old, who has been on Arsene Wenger’s radar at Arsenal for some time, has represented Greece at many youth levels following his climb up the ranks at Olympiacos, and this week was reportedly subject of a bid from Bundesliga outfit, Bayer Leverkusen. Tottenham Hotspur are also thought to have scouted him.
Baxter recently flew in to Europe to meet up with current and potential Bafana players, and while things appear to be promising regarding Joel Untersee – a South African-born Swiss youth international – Greece seem to be intent on making sure Retsos aligns with them.
Untersee, a reported target for Hellas Verona, is already 23 and, because he still hasn’t played for the Swiss senior team, Baxter could be successful in persuading him to come on board to help Bafana’s efforts to reach the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Sources in Greece, however, have suggested that the Greek Football Association are prepared to fight tooth and nail to make sure that Retsos represents them, and he was even called up to their last World Cup qualifier in June.
The centre back, who turned 19 on Wednesday, is likely to have to make his choice this month as Greece face Estonia on August 31st and Bafana face Cape Verde the following day.
