Dr Khoza To Try To Lure Pienaar To Pirates, Again?
Dr Irvin Khoza To Try To Lure Steven Pienaar To Orlando Pirates, Again?
Former Bafana Bafana captain Steven Pienaar recently revealed that he would like to end his career in South Africa, but will Dr Irvin Khoza once again try to persuade him to join Orlando Pirates?
Pienaar signed a one-year deal with English Premier League outfit Sunderland in August last year, which means he will become a free agent at the end of the current season, and extending his stay with the Black Cats seems unlikely at this point after the club was relegated from England's top flight.
The 35-year-old recently revealed to British media that he feels he still has one more year of football in his legs, and that if he had a choice, he would want to end his career in South Africa.
"I think I've still a got year in me but all of the injuries that I've had over the last two years, I don't think my body can take much more… If it is up to me, then you want to finish your career where it all started, which is back home. If I do get the opportunity, then I'll take it with open arms," Pienaar told Sky Sports.
Pienaar revealed in an exclusive interview with Soccer Laduma last year that he met with Dr Khoza and told the Pirates chairman he would have considered joining Pirates if an opportunity to play in England was not on the cards.
Now, with the player's latest stint in the Premier League coming to an end, the Siya crew has been told that informal discussions about a possible move to Mzansi have been initiated.
With the player indicating he is keen on ending his career back home, will Dr Khoza look to once again try to bring the Westbury-born player to the Soweto giants?
