A former Manchester City star has sent a warning to the club over their reported pursuit of Lionel Messi which could affect Kevin De Bruyne's future.
There were reports in England this week claiming that De Bruyne was left annoyed by City's contract, which would be less than he is currently earning.
It is believed that City are still keen on Lionel Messi, which would see the club hold some funds in an attempt to make the move possible next season.
Former City midfielder Scott Sinclair feels all the Messi talk could ultimately effect De Bruyne's decision to sign an extension.
"He knows his worth; if you don't know your worth at 29 years old then you've got something wrong.
"He probably knows what the ball-park figure is that he wants to be earning; he'll want to be the top-paid player at the football club.
"But what he might've said is that he wants to be the top-paid player regardless of who comes in. That's a problem for City if they're serious about signing Messi.
"De Bruyne's wages could go up an astronomical amount if he wants to be on bigger wages than Messi."
