Both players made the 30-man Ballon d'Or shortlist announced by France Football on Monday, and are in contention to lift their sixth Golden Ball.
However, Ronaldo wrote his name into the award's history books after being nominated for a 16th year in a row.
No other player can look back at such an impressive reign since the award was first launched in 1956 – Messi follows in second place with 14 successive nominations.
