The match was delayed due to thunder storms, and the game only got underway at 20h45.

The conditions certainly hand an effect on both sides, which led to a scrappy affair in the opening 20 minutes at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

Itumeleng Khune was the busier of the two goalkeepers in the first half, as he produced a couple fine saves to keep out strikes from Kwanda Mngonyama.

Steve Komphela's charges enjoyed more of the possession in the first half, but were unable to carve out a clear-cut opening.

Maritzburg, meanwhile, have certainly held their own in the opening 45 minutes and look threatening down the left flank.

Chiefs broke the deadlock after 50 minutes when an un-marked Willard Katsande headed home at the far post for his fourth goal of the season.

Roger De Sa opted for a changed five minutes later as Bryce Moon replaced Evans Rusike for the home side.

Komphela made a couple changes of his own after 60 minutes as Gustavo Paez and William Twala were introduced.

Maritzburg leveled matters in the 73rd minute as Mohau Mokate was allowed time and space to slot the ball into the top corner from 12-yards out.

Chiefs restored their lead in the 80th minute when Tshabalala turned home Ramahlwe Mphahlele's low cross from the right flank.

The Team of Choice pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, but the Chiefs defence managed to stand firm.

The victory sees Chiefs move up to second spot, while Maritzburg find themselves in eighth spot.

Here's how they lined up:

Maritzburg: 1. Mpandle, 2. Onyango, 26. Shandu (Saal 80'), 27. Shabalala, 5. Weidlich, 28. Mekoa (Van Wyk 70'), 37. Ndlovu, 45. Mngonyama, 19. Rusike (Moon 57'), 15, Maboe, 22. Mokate.

Chiefs: 32. Khune, 2. Mphahlele, 26. Gordinho, 3. Mathoho, 13. Khumalo, 12. Maluleka, 31. Katsande, 23. Molangoane (Twala 66'), 11. Chirambadare (Paez 61'), 14. Tshabalala, 25. Parker.

Mr English you forgiven for now but one thing I don't like about his tactics is we always sit back defending a single goal

I wonder what will be Khompela's trick in the next game w/out Tower ! Will he slot in erratic Codesa or Xulu ? Or will he bring in Moleko to his right back position and push Rama to the centre to partner Gordinho ! I don't prefer the latter as Rama makes costly mistakes at centre back . Even the former is not good either , eish I don't feel comfortable without Mathoho in that defence.

@kamuke : I agree with you on that one , even no.23 Molangoane is not performing as much as he did before the mid season break. They all need to wake up Lebese & Thwala are waiting on the wings.
