Chippa United held Mamelodi Sundowns to a 1-1 draw at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium in their Absa Premiership encounter on Tuesday evening.
The game got off to as scrappy start largely due to the heavy and wet state of the Dukashe pitch, with neither side able to enjoy their usual fluid passing style of play.
Yannick Zakri squandered a good opportunity to give his side the lead in the second minute after outpacing Justice Chabalala, but his tame shot was easily dealt with by Daniel Akpeyi.
Masandawana opened the scoring in the 18th minute from when Teko Modise's enticing free-kick into the area found Wayne Arendse unmarked at the backpost and the skipper cooly slotted away.
Chippa immediately responded by throwing numbers forward in search of the equaliser, but the Sundowns defence stood firm.
The home side were rewarded a penalty in the 35th minute when Arendse was adjudged to have brought down Buayni Sali in the area with replays suggesting that he got the ball.
Rhulani Manzini stepped up to slot away the resultant penalty and tally his league goal tally to four goals.
Sundowns came out with a more of an attacking intent in the second half and should've taken the lead in the 48th minute when Fares Haci and Themba Zwane combined well to find Teko Modise unmarked at the back post, but the midfielder blasted his effort over the bar.
Zakri came close to giving his side the lead in the 60th minute, when Zwane's ball evaded Paseka Mako but the Ivorian's shot hit the side netting.
Both side's upped their tempo in search of the equaliser and both teams were guilty of missing glorious opportunities with Manzini,Zakri and Castro the main culprits.
The introduction of Thapelo Morena and Tebogo Langerman sparked some life into Sundowns who laid siege at the Chilli Boys goal, but were unable to break the deadlock as Chippa held onto firmly for the draw.
Substitute Linda Shiba almost secured all three points for his side late-on when he got the better of Arendse, but Wayne Sandilands came to his side's rescue.
