Reports: Zungu Attracts English Interest

Sheffield Wednesday May Be Interested In Bongani Zungu

By Soccer Laduma - Jun 15, 2017 01:28 PM
According to reports coming out of England, Bafana Bafana international, Bongani Zungu, has attracted interest from English Championship side, Sheffield Wednesday.

The 24-year-old had an impressive second half of the season with Vitoria de Guimaraes in Portugal and has gone on to attract interest from the likes of Benfica and Porto in the Primeira Liga.

Now, though, media in Portugal are reporting that the English side is keeping an eye on the midfielder as they look to build a team capable of reaching the English Premier League next season after missing out on the play-offs in 2016/17.

Wednesday have a Portuguese head coach, Carlos Carvalhal, who is clearly staying abreast of players excelling in his home country, but it is thought that Guimaraes are only willing to part with Zungu if they receive an offer of €3.5m (R49m).

However, given South Africa’s placing outside of FIFA’s top 50, Zungu is unlikely to receive a work permit for the UK and therefore, a move to England would be extremely difficult – although not impossible – at this stage in his career.

@mercedece non-EU player applying for the permit must have played for his country in at least 75 per cent of its competitive 'A' team matches for which he was available for selection during the previous two years, and his country must have averaged at least 70th place in the official FIFA world rankings over the previous two years. If a player does not meet those criteria, the club wishing to sign him may appeal
