Phiri Loses Appeal, Misses Cup Final
Lebogang Phiri Will Miss The Danish Cup Final
Lebogang Phiri has been handed a big blow today after the Danish Football Association rejected his club’s appeal of his recent red card.
Phiri, 22, was shown a straight red card for a tackle on Janus Drachmann in their semi-final win over FC Midtjylland, however, the player and his club appealed the decision believing that it was too harsh.
The South African is believed to be playing his last season with the club as his current contract comes to an end, and the DBU Pokalen final against FC Copenhagen would’ve been the perfect send off for the fan favourite.
Brondby have already secured UEFA Europa League football next year after their impressive showing in the Superliga, with their four remaining league games merely a formality having guaranteed themselves a second place.
Phiri will be devastated to miss the final as Brondby search for their first trophy since 2008, but the association’s decision is now final and his head coach will have to make do without his star South African.
The final will be played on May 25th, with Phiri’s last game at the club expected to be at home to Nordsjælland on May 28th unless Brondby manages to finally persuade him to stay on past the end of the season.
