Shakes & Other Top Coaches Continue With Talent Searching
Nedbank Ke Yona Team Search Back On
Former Bafana Bafana coach Ephraim "Shakes" Mashaba will again be involved in the project to identify, develop and select the best raw football talent in South Africa through the Nedbank Ke Yona Team Search programme.
As per the previous editions of the programme, Mashaba will be joined by coaches Owen Da Gama, Mike Mangena and Khabo Zondo in the project.
The details of the try-outs for this year's search have been confirmed in a statement on behalf of the competition organisers and sponsors.
"The first three try-outs of the Nedbank Ke Yona Team Search have been concluded. South Africa's football coaching maestros Owen Da Gama, Mike Mangena, Shakes Mashaba and Khabo Zondo are continuing the journey to identify, develop and ultimately deliver their selection of the best raw footballing talent Mzansi has to offer. With only a couple of days to go before the next batch of try-outs, Nedbank Ke Yona Team Search entrants should be motivated at the opportunity that awaits them to impress the Ke Yona selectors and become South Africa's newest rising stars, following in the footsteps of Aubrey Modiba who has gone on to represent Bafana Bafana and the Men's Olympic Team after being spotted at the trials in 2014," the statement read.
The first phase of the competition started on 27 April at the Nedbank Cup holders SuperSport United's home ground, the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville.
The second and third phases of the competition were held at the Dr Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein and Cape Town's Athlone Stadium on 29 April and 1 May, respectively.
Ke Yona Team selector Mike Mangena, speaking at the Cape Town trials, gave his views about the untapped talent that turned out in their numbers.
"Many aspirant footballers have big dreams and within those dreams lie a responsibility for us to channel the correct energy and resources into ensuring that the young hopefuls are not only validated, but given a relevant platform from which they can excel. The Nedbank Ke Yona Team Search is that platform. We are thoroughly impressed with the quality and determination of the players that we have seen thus far and we believe that the next three cities will give us solid players such as the likes of SuperSport United and Bafana Bafana player Maphosa Modiba, AmaTuks striker Ian Chikohwa or Mwenya Chibwe from Platinum Stars," Mangena said.
The players selected from the try-out phase of the competition will go through a selection criteria at the next phase of the competition in the form of a boot camp.
The final 18 players selected will be drafted into PSL teams after playing at the KeYona Challenge against the 2017 Nedbank Cup winners.
Two more provinces that will host trials are KwaZulu-Natal (at the King Zwelithini Stadium on 20 May) and Gauteng (at Rand Stadium on 10 June).
According to the organisers' schedule, the trials for the Eastern Cape were at the Wolfson Stadium on 13 May, last Saturday.
