It's now no secret that Kaizer Chiefs are scouring the market looking for a goalkeeper following an injury to their number one and captain Itumeleng Khune, which – it has long been confirmed – will keep him out of action for six months.
But surprisingly, coach Ernst Middendorp doesn't seem too eager to waste his energy searching for an experienced head to keep Virgil Vries on his toes.
The current first-choice gave an average showing on Wednesday night when Amakhosi beat AmaZulu 3-2 in an Absa Premiership clash at the King Zwelithini Stadium.
"Why should we run around like headless chickens on the market to look and find whatever, here and there? Give responsibility to the guys we have," the coach told journalists after that game.
"I think the club, at the beginning of the season, has done a job to put the goalkeepers together. And you have to respect it a little bit. Of course, these guys didn't play a lot and need a bit of experience – Bruce is a very good goalkeeper and there is Brylon Petersen, a young goalkeeper behind. Realistically, where is the guy? I think Gavin Hunt was throwing (Darren) Keet, his goalkeeper, to the market. If he wants to get rid of him, I will take him, gladly."
The Siya crew has already reported that Keet has snubbed Chiefs and wants to return to Europe when his Bidvest Wits contract expires in June.
Reyaad Pieterse and Thela Ngobeni are also believed to be transfer targets for Amakhosi in what is now a developing story for the hunt to replace Khune.
