Chiefs & Pirates Can No Longer Rely On Being Chiefs & Pirates…

Is There A Shifting Of Power In South Africa

By Joe Crann - Dec 29, 2016 01:48 PM @YesWeCrann
There seems to have been a shift of power in South African football…

Kaizer Chiefs, who have won two of the last four Absa Premiership titles, sit fourth at the Christmas break, while Orlando Pirates, recent double-treble winners, are sat in the bottom half of the table.

Chiefs and Pirates have won just 24 league games out of the 66 that they have played between them in 2016 and since the start of 2015 the ‘Soweto Giants’ have claimed just one piece of silverware – Chiefs’ 2014/15 Absa Premiership win – out of a possible eight. Pirates’ only trophy since winning the league in 2012 is the 2014 Nedbank Cup.

Twice this year Chiefs have gone 7+ games without a win, and Pirates succumbed to their joint-worst defeat in the club’s history as they were hammered 6-1 by SuperSport United, prompting Muhsin Ertugral to resign live on television.

To some extent you can’t help but feel that the two biggest clubs in South Africa have rested on their laurels somewhat and – to some extent – started to believe their own hype. For years they’ve been able to sign players and succeed just because they’re Chiefs and Pirates. That’s no longer the case.

Mamelodi Sundowns – irrespective of the financial muscle that Patrice Motsepe brings – have continued to build. Not content with two league titles and two domestic cups between 2013 and 2016, Masandawana went on to conquer Africa and become the first South Africans to play in the FIFA Club World Cup.

‘Brand Kaizer Chiefs’ and ‘Brand Orlando Pirates’ are huge. There are simply are no other clubs in South Africa that can demand the sort of sponsorship and support that the Soweto Giants demand, but as we know, football is played on the field. Not off it.

I’d go as far as saying that now – aside from the few who sign with their hearts over heads – if Sundowns, SuperSport or Bidvest Wits offer exactly the same amount to a player as Chiefs or Pirates, we’d see that player in Tshwane or Braamfontein rather than Soweto. Rand for rand I think the Soweto clubs finish second nowadays.

Look at the amount of players actively deciding to leave the Glamour Boys – Reneilwe Letsholonyane, Reyaad Pieterse & Co – even though a contract offer was on the table, and the players that the Buccaneers, actually that both clubs, have missed out on despite serious interest.

Cole Alexander, Darren Keet, Anele Ngcongca. They were all free agents that Chiefs, Pirates or both, were keen to land, but they ended up elsewhere.

As fans grow more discontented with what’s going on at their clubs, both Bucs and the Glamour Boys seem more focused on making sure the huge marketing machines that have been created continue to thrive than on what is happening where it all matters. Out on the field.

Whether the downward spiral is related to the growing distance between the clubs and their head honchos cannot be known, but if it is the case then what does that say for the future as they draw closer to retirement.

The current shift in power could temporary or more long-term, however that’s a decision that is, seemingly, in the hands of the Soweto Giants themselves. It’s up to them to alter their own routes and make sure that one trophy from eight remains an exception and doesn’t become the norm.

Big teams like Al Ahly continue to produce on the field. They never stop. Teams like Africa Sports National and Asec Mimosas are shadows of their former self. TP Mazembe is another consistent team. If the so called teams do not deliver they will end up just like AC Milan.

I contacted drmamafaima on +27633555301 in regards of my lover. He no longer wanted to associate with me any more. He was interested in his 'new girlfriend' and his friends than me. I begged and pleaded several times with him but in vain and I realized it was out of my hands, Then he left me. My co-worker who went through a similar situation told me that drmamafaima had helped her. I cant say how much I'm grateful she introduced me to drmamafaima , we are getting married next year, I don't know what I would have done without you. I believe you are my guardian angel so if there is anybody with a problem like i had cantact drmamafaima +27633555301 she will nhelp you i tell you this . manju Amanda. (southafrica johanesburg)

This two teams are disappointing, the players that they have don't deserve to don this jerseys. You can simply see what Soweto derby have turned to be. What's only left is our love to this teams which unfortunately we don't get the mutual response to this players. At this point and time, I hate every single player of my team and I hope one day, they all go and New players come to restore our team. As it stands I will never stop supporting Pirates but this players, I hate them with passion.

In my opinion, our beloved Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates will have to catch a huge wake up because indeed other teams have raised the bar.Players don't really care about playing for Chiefs or Pirates anymore but it's also great for SA football when other teams rise.

@Vasilios, that is your baby Chief, you go and check my reply to your comment, nowhere did I mention Chiefs Player by name. You put your words in my mouth. About Kutumela, "I said the likes of Kutumela, NFD materials". Since when does this phrase refer to a particular Player? Be serious man. What am I changing here?

@Vasilios, well, people get irritated even if they don't say it. How can a prediction be a fact? I have never said that a prediction is a fact. Yes, future event can be a fact if it is linked to the current happenings. What I have committed myself to and which I still commit to is a chain of current events which will lead to a particular results in future. That for me is not a prediction, it is a continuation of events or chain of events. Is the fact that makeshift Technical Team at Bucs will not achieve anything come the end of the season a prediction? A say No... Does the fact that free agents at Komphela 's disposal will not assist Chiefs winning a single Cup a prediction? A say No.... My training tells me that a fact leading to a particular event in future is not a prediction. I farm today in order to harvest tomorrow. That is a fact even if there might be eventualities such as storm and hail capable of destroying my crops. Does the fact that a pregnant woman will give birth in Nine Months time a prediction? I don't think so.

@setlaboswana I'm done with you....there's simply no reasoning with you at all....You say one thing and when I take you up on that, you're suddenly singing a different tune....Fact is you said free agents and NFD players won't see a way forward at Chiefs and Pirates and the last I checked, Chirambadare was a free agent and Kutumela was an NFD player....You did not once say that you meant the whole class free agents and NFD players signed by Pirates, you're only saying it now that I have made examples of players that prove your idiotic statements wrong....Surely you're smart enough to realize that not all NFD players can make the cut at the PSL, no one is expecting NFD players to be instant stars in the PSL, our logic is not as distorted as yours....PLEASE DON'T EVER RESPOND TO ANY OF MY COMMENTS IN FUTURE AS I WILL NO LONGER RESPOND TO YOURS EITHER....I cannot keep arguing with an idiot who keeps on changing his statements whenever he is proven wrong....I'm done with this argument and I'm done with you....This is my last comment to you on this site, I never want to engage in any conversation or argument with you because you've proven to be stupid and idiotic beyond belief.

@Vasilios, is Chiramadare the only free agent at Chiefs? Why don't you mention other free agents. Even if you call his one goal a good return, that is by Chiefs and Bucs standard...Shame... About Kutumela, I said the likes of Kutumela, NFD materials will not see a way forward. If you knew how to interpret words, you would have realised the I refer to a class of Players with more or less same qualities. I didn't say he will not play or score. Honestly, I won't expect much from the Player, he is fresh from NFD. I think his 5 goals target this season in all competitions is too high for a Player who is in his first ever PSL debut.

@setlaboswana Why would you assume others are irritated if none of them have personally told you that they are?....You are confused buddy....You said you don't make any statements unless they are based on facts but you made statements based on your prediction of future events, not facts...It seems that you're having trouble understanding your own comments....Go read through your own previous comments and then read the one's where you said you don't commit to any statement unless it is a fact....Once you finally notice the contradictory statements I'm referring to, you can then reply to my comments again, if not, don't bother responding to this comment as I will not reply to yours any further from this point onward.

@Vasilios, I didn't say I am irritated. I said I think some fellow bloggers are irritated by your groaning. There is no where I treated my predictions as a fact, that is impossible. Your might have misinterpreted my comments. I told you that I predicted a bright future for Downs many years ago where there was no hope but I held on. We are the most happy supporters at the moment, in fact, I have been happy since late 90s. Hope things change for the better for your Chiefs (since you have turned their Lawyer this days) and Pirates Teams in this coming year and beyond.

@setlaboswana You are irritated because I'm saying things you don't want to hear....I have no problem with you making predictions, but don't tell us that those predictions are facts because no one on this earth can accurately predict the future....What do you know about my life that makes you think I'm frustrated and troubled?....Are you a fortune teller now?....Good for you and your predictions. I will not argue with you on these predictions as it would be pointless and time consuming because no one knows for certain that any of what you said will happen or not...Of course Khoza and Kaizer have been making a lot of blunders in the past, every Chiefs and Pirates supporter knows this. We're always living in the hope that things will change and that we'll re-establish our dominance in South Africa, maybe it will happen, maybe it won't, nobody on the face of this earth knows whether things will change or not....You can continue making your predictions about Chiefs' and Pirates' future, I have no issue with that, but I do take offence when you start passing off your predictions as facts to other bloggers....You told me that you rely on facts before making statements about anything but you failed to mention that your predictions are not facts....Stop telling us one thing and then doing the exact opposite because those are the traits of hypocrites.

@Vasilios, you are saying the same thing over and again, which does not assist anyone here. I think some fellow bloggers are irritated by your groaning. Man up and face reality chief. You are out of order. I will still make predictions. I predicted long ago that Chiefs and Bucs will not win a Cup last season and this season. Wait until the end of the season and tell me I lied if my predictions are wrong and I will apologise to you and the football fraternity. I also realised that you tend to vent anger at the wrong people for your troubles and frustration. Let me give you my pre-view of what is likely to happen at Chiefs and Pirates going forward for the last time. The two Clubs will exist at least for foreseeable future but not as dominant as they used to in the 70s and 80s as you use say. I see them as nothing more than any other Club, just adding numbers. Downs, Suppersport Utd, Wits and maybe Platinum Stars (at later stages) are going to lead the trend in the near future. I see Kaizer disposing off his shares in an attempt to rescue Chiefs. I see Bucs going through serious difficulties for a very long time. There are always possibilities that Chiefs and Pirates my change their Administration, maybe...I say maybe..their situations can become better. If your were honest with yourself, you would have realised that both Kaizer and Khoza are making one blunder after another lately, they are either doing something wrong or failing to do something right. Whether this is a coincidence or can be attributed to their age, I cannot tell. Yeah, I don't expect Chiefs and Bucs to turn things around under the current Administration and Leadership.
