The Citizens handed former Leicester City youth midfielder Khanya Leshabela his debut, as the only change from the penalty shootout defeat against SuperSport in the Nedbank Cup.
Matsatsantsa, on the other hand, brought back their regulars who were rested in the CAF Confederation Cup outing against Modern Future, with the likes of Bradley Grobler, Gamphani Lungu, Siyanda Xulu and Grant Margeman restored to the line-up.
Eric Tinkler's charges were quick off the blocks in the opening exchanges, taking shots at goal but the United defence was standing firm.
SuperSport only started to get into the game after the half-hour mark as Shandre Campbell forced a save out of Keet with a threatening strike.
Gavin Hunt's men could not carry the momentum and City started to put them under pressure again, as Thabo Nodada came close with a strike from range that was saved by shot-stopper Ricardo Goss.
City had a perfect start in the second stanza as Khanyisa Mayo eventually broke the deadlock four minutes in with a strike from range and scored his ninth goal of the league season.
The Citizens continued to threaten and Hunt finally made an attacking change just before the hour-mark, as Etiosa Ighodaro came on for Campbell.
United gained momentum after that and with 22 minutes remaining, Ighodaro almost levelled matters with a header that missed wide from a cross by Lyle Lakay.
Matsatsantsa struggled to create chances in the closing stages and were rescued by Lakay in stoppage time, who equalised with a free-kick just before the final whistle.
City and United remained tied on points, in second and third spots respectively but the Citizens had a superior goal difference.
